Welcome to The Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa Community Based Health Care & AIDS Relief Project
The Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa CBHC and AIDS Relief Project began in 1996 as an exclusively community based home care program providing, initially, medical care to HIV positive people and other sick-poor individuals. Volunteer CHWs (community health workers) from Catholic parishes form the “backbone” of the project leading nurses to the homes of their sick neighbors.
PROGRAM SUCCESS STORY
The program started in 1996 with 1 staff nurse and 12 volunteer CHWs taking care of patients in one parish, Bomu. Currently, the number of staff has grown to 44 and we are able to offer quality care to growing numbers of patients.
No laboratory tests were done in the initial years but right now we are able to do almost all the necessary tests for our clients.
Program and patients’ database was manual; over the years, computerization has made it easier to capture patient data and generate useful reports.
Support Groups
Every parish/workstation has a support group for its clients who meet once a week for continuous education and they also have income generating projects which have helped them uplift their standards of living i.e. SILC (Savings Internal Lending Cooperative).
