The Project Today

Our catchment area is 9 Catholic Parishes in Mombasa City with approximate population  over 800,000 people.

The Project follows   over 10,000 HIV infected clients and more than 35,000 non- infected  poor people.

Most essential to delivery of services are volunteers “Wahudumu wa Afya” (Health servants) who are trained Community Health Care Workers.

Anyone sick in Bomu, Chaani, Changamwe, Mikindani, Miritini, Mtopanga, Mbungoni, Kiembeni & Kongowea can obtain help from the Small Christian Communities in the nearest parish.

FINDINGS

Invariablely People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) are found. These people suffer from numerous complaints including diarrhea, coughs and respiratory infections and various skin disorders.  The nurses follow these clients more closely providing Vitamins and medicines as the situation warrants.  Often the client is referred to other, usually government medical facilities.  This is often the case in Tuberculosis infections and usually the case with STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections).

The prevalency rate for HIV infections in Kenya is very high.  Some estimate the rate in Mombasa to be greater than 10%.  Our experience bears this out.  Many people suffer terribly.  The already limited resources of many families are quickly depleted with recurrent opportunistic infections associated with AIDS.  The cost of transport of the dead to home areas is very high.  Children are dropping out of school for lack of school fees.  Unable to cope with the accumulated grief of the mounting death toll many attempt to lessen the strain by means of increased alcohol and drug abuse.  As followers of Jesus Christ, we must respond to this grave situation.
